When In Doubt?

I’m currently reading “Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance” in small spurts, mostly before bed. Today I read this statement and thought I’d comment:

“You are never dedicated to something you have complete confidence in. No one is fanatically shouting that the sun is going to rise tomorrow. They know it’s going to rise tomorrow. When people are fanatically dedicated to political or religious faiths or any other kinds of dogmas or goals, it’s always because these dogmas or goals are in doubt.”

Is this saying that a person that is completely devoid of dedication is the person most sure of him or herself. I can’t say that I agree with that, but I will say that a lot of fanatical people, do seem to be too easily threatened by alternative views or ideas.
