Too Late

I made a few improvements to the site tonight. I stayed up way too late doing them, but if feels good to finally start finishing some of the design from my last refresh.

Basically, I worked on the individual post page, hopefully making it easier to use. The comments are now flip flopped with a background color. I used a little PHP to make that magic happen.

<?php $nCount++; ?>
<div class="singlecomment<?php if ($nCount % 2 == 1) { echo " odd"; } ?>" id="c<$MTCommentID pad="1"$>">

I must say that mixing MT template tags and PHP is strange. It makes the whole code, save, refresh procedure a little tougher to execute. Comment timestamps are also now relative. I like that feature a lot on other weblogs. I wish more weblog tools had it built in and set as the default.

I finally changed the comment script name, but I don’t know that it will help much with spam. Using MTBlacklist and closing comments on old entries seems to be working best so far. I haven’t seen a spam in several days. Of course, I’ve probably just jinxed myself.

On the home page, you might notice the “Heavy Rotation” album artwork. This is an unfinished feature, but basically it comes from a specially named playlist in iTunes. I plan on sharing the little Javascript/PHP hack once I tighten it up a little bit. Hopefully within the next week or so.

I also bumped the default font size up a notch. My eyes are going bad.

So it’s a start, or actually it’s a continuation. I still want to put a search feature back up, but I want to find a replacement for the MT search or maybe roll my own. I also need to figure out the comment preview system. Right now it doesn’t have any style to it. Oh yeah, and I want pretty links. But that means I need to make sure I properly redirect the old ones probably using .htaccess and more PHP magic. Anyway, these are the things on my list.

"Originally published on February 16, 2005 03:23 AM" - Wow AJ, you were up late! I wish Wordpress used relative time stamps for its comments as well. Hmmm...add it to my list. Also, I like the idea of the differing backgrounds for comments; reminds me of your styling the web order items at the Tuh - very visually pleasing and easy to read. The heavy rotation thing is cool too, I'd like to see what's under it's hood sometime.

I think I've seen a WP plugin somewhere for the time since thing. I'll try to dig it up...

And thanks for pointing out the way I stated the published date. I've tweaked the format just a little bit.
