SXSW Browsing Habits

At each of the panels I’ve been to this year I’ve been switching back and forth between notepad and firefox. I failed miserably at taking notes in 2003 and my record for this year is not much better. The one reason I keep opening up the laptop — other than it being so new and so fun to use — is that I feel like the environment for browsing is different.

Normally I start off by launching Chameleon Reader and clicking through to some of my “Promptly Read Feeds”. These are the individuals that have carefully drafted a post and perhaps are talking and linking to something interesting on the web.

While at SXSW I’m listening to multiple panelists and questions from the crowd and whenever I hear some word or phrase that is unknown to me — I google it. This happens a lot. Another interesting source of new content is seeing what some of the panelists have up on the big screen. From Tantek’s screen during one of his panels I noticed Prodigem Torrents page and then found out about OpenCyc’s 0.9 release which led me to DAML which is connected to the The Semantic Web: Promising Future or Utter Failure panel.

I’ll miss these super fast connections that happen once this conference is over in a few hours. I’m guessing that if you’re really involved in some of the different online “communities” you can get this same type of situation going on when you’re sitting alone in your media room and your tribe is all connected via a wiki or chat or some other hyper-connective technology.

This also reminds me to mention that even though I’ve got a brand new ThinkPad laptop and I’m very happy with it, I still have a bad case of Mac envy. The SubEthaEdit and iChat applications seem to be much, much better than anything I’ve seen for the PC. Tim Bray asked the question and I’m eagerly waiting for someone to answer him. I also found out that Rendezvous (the apple networking magic) is starting to become available for Windows. It will be interesting to see what happens. My fingers are crossed.
