Thinking (and Betting) about the Future

I can’t remember where I first saw this, but I thought it was worth linking to. LongBets.org is a public arena for placing long-term bets, A.K.A. - “accountable predictions”. Most of the current 8 recorded bets are by big name tech CEO’s, VP’s, etc…. With a minimum bet of $1,000 USD, I’m not surprised.

This idea is really intriguing to me. My wife would shoot me if I were to put down our money on a bet of 50 bucks, much less a thousand. However, the money and the risk attracts attention, and that attention stirs debate and thinking about the future. A good thing in my opinion. My apologies to the families of compulsive gamblers that might read this.

After further reading on the site, I've noticed that it isn't "real" bets since both parties put up half the money, and pick a charity that will be the beneficiary if they win. More of a philanthropic nature than I previously thought; which is nice, actually.
