PHP 5 — More OO

I’ve really only got about 40 hours of PHP coding experience so far. I know I’m probably misunderstanding things about it, and I’m probably doing things that I shouldn’t. Having said all that, I must say that it has been great learning a new language and experiementing with features that my current scripting language doesn’t have (ASP/VBScript).

This may be jumping the gun a little, since I don’t know PHP 4.3 very well but I was hugely impressed by the Introduction to PHP5 presentation. The new object oriented stuff looks really solid. And to think that I was impressed by PHP 4.3’s OO compared to ASP/VBScript which has virtually none.

I’m even tempted to try and get a build of PHP 5 running on my dreamhost account. I have no idea if that’s possible, but it’s worth a shot.

Eeks. PHP5 should be called php.NET or something similar and be forked from the main dev tree. PHP is such a beautiful scripting language. If I want to program I'll stick with Java which is essentially what PHP5 is. It seems sort of like the Apache Version issue, with 1.3 and 2. No one really likes version two. It was nice conceptually, but it isn't really there. Then again, it is not a nice thing, conceptually or otherwise to turn a scripting language into a programming language.
