GoogleGuy, Iocaine Powder and Dan Egnor

On this google weblog post GoogleGuy gives a little history about his public forum posting then leaves a rather cryptic p.s.s. about Iocaine Powder. The first google result is a description of the program that Dan Egnor wrote in 1999 for the First International RoShamBo Programming Competition; a program which dominated the event.

On the RoShamBo page it explains that the name of the program (Iocaine Powder) comes from the movie “The Princess Bride”. Funny, only because GoogleGuy uses the same movie to explain his choosing the name “GoogleGuy”.

One other interesting note: In 2002 Dan Egnor won the First Google Programming contest with his Geocoder (probably the starting point for google (local)).

I don’t know about you, but I think Dan Egnor is probably the current incarnation of Googleguy. (or maybe not…)

Last google related item of interest: they’re looking for some UI developers right now~!

Just as a historical note:

I hadn't seen the movie "The Princess Bride" when I first wrote this weblog post. Two days later I bought the DVD and have watched it twice.

It's definitely a great movie and had I seen prior to reading the googleguy post I probably wouldn't have even thought to research iocaine powder and find a Dan Egnor connection (if a connection really exists).

It seems that your "Dan Egnor"==GoogleGuy hypothesis may be true.

According to the interview at http://www.onlisareinsradar.com/archives/001881.php, Dan is currently working at Google

However, the first GoogleGuy post at WebmasterWorld was in October 2001 http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum86/31.htm and according to Dan's resume http://dan.egnor.name/resume/ he was working at Morgan Stanley until May 2003.

He could just be one of many GoogleGuys behind that particularly comfortable mask, or he may just be the man of the moment.

It seems about right this entire theory about GGGuy being Dan. Well done Sherlock ;-)
